Ta-da!
We’ve taken six test laps in the Town Character concept car. It’s been a good ride, sometimes bumpy, but mostly comfy.
On the 26th of October, I’ll fling the silk sheet right off the baby and reveal the new model.
Why a Grand Re-Opening?
First, after driving T.C. around for a while, I’ve landed on a tagline I’m happy with. Your comments have helped.
“Towns, Characters, and Curiosities” gets at the heart of what I love to write about. It also sets down some guardrails so you can expect some consistency from a generalist like me.
Second, it’s getting a custom logo. I think you’ll agree it feels town-character-ish and Tom-ish.
Why October 26?
It will be my birthday!
I feel a bit like Bilbo Baggins. At his “eleventy first” birthday celebration, he gave away all he had then ceremoniously disappeared. I’m not quite that old, nor am I crafty enough to vanish. I don’t even feel the need to.
What I want is to see my Town Character emails “land” well, like well-timed gifts.
If they make a few of you laugh, cry, seek, ask, or find, the gift of joy will return to me. And that’s all I want. Well, that and these roller skates:
With those jammers strapped to my feet, I would skate right through the six decades of my life. From The Beach Boys to Pink Floyd and Boy George to Backstreet Boys and Switchfoot to Vampire Weekend.
Put that way, “60” seems kinda cool, right?1
Thanks for riding along and picking up hitchhikers (sharing my emails). I’m looking forward to “gifting” you more in the coming year!
Cheers,
Tom Becker, Certified Town Character®

And, yes, Harry Styles, for heaven’s sake! I can’t leave him out.
Hey Tom,looking forward to your birthday! Talk about towncar! I inherited a footrest for a town car. I found it in my house as I fixed it up. Didn't know what it was good for. Just an old car part. I took it to Hershey Friday, and a guy told me what it was! A footrest for a towncar. Friday was the last day of the show. Most vendors were packed up and gone. I told him I wanted $50.He gave me $20. I put the bill in my pocket.
