News from Town
I’m writing in the Lewisburg, PA public library to debut the new look of my Substack and to share a bit of news with you, my family of readers. Becky and I lived here in our first “housekeeping” from 1985 to 1995, and our first three kids (Katie, Eliza, and Hannah) were born at Evangelical Hospital.
As I was scratching around for some inspiration just moments ago, I emerged from the restroom with no further insights only to find a brochure rack with both Lewisburg and Watsontown featured on the top row. I took it as a sign.
Both towns formed me deeply and keep speaking to me as I seek to understand how place relates to identity, culture, and meaning.
One Day My Own TV Show?
The ticker tape parade in my honor as I rode my bicycle across the Susquehanna River bridge into Watsontown on my birthday (today) to launch Town Character before adoring crowds of cronies and international admiration didn’t exactly come through as I had envisioned.
Becky, however, did plan a sweet get-away for us amidst the rolling hills and ripening waves of foliage outside of New Berlin, PA. Though I wanted to “gift” you all with something splashy yet down-home in the vein of Mike Rowe, all I have time for is a few pictures.
Maybe one day I will in fact shoot a video in my hometown, and when I do, I expect you all to be there. Along with the cronies, the sidewalk supervisors, and town characters.
Till then, thanks for reading, responding, and sharing!

My third “Side Ways” column appeared in Lancaster Newspapers on Sunday. I had the privilege of writing about stunt bike riders in Lancaster city. I’m so grateful to my editor, Jenelle, who has given me the opportunity to pitch ideas to her once a month on just about anything I care to write about. Does she even know how dangerous that is? Here’s the link. (It may require you to create an account with LNP). I hope you enjoy and will stay on the lookout for future articles in the Sunday Living section.
