Wait, What?!
You know how when a thing or a word you never heard before suddenly lands on you twice, sometimes on the same day?
My friend Joeseph told me that he was on a group bike ride through Adams County last week and caught a sign out of the corner of his eye:
Corvair Ranch
If it weren’t for a caption at the very bottom of my latest Town Character, he wouldn’t have noticed.
As it was he was shocked! I admit I was too, especially given its location on a rural road parallel to Lincoln Highway (Route 30).
Kudos to Joe for being such an observant reader and traveler.
Sub-Coincidence
A few days later, I made it a point to stop at the ranch near New Oxford, PA en route to Luray, VA.
A guard beagle named Princess, living up to her name, howled the entire time she was not being petted.
I met up with Jeff Stonesifer, the owner and operator for 38 years. He not only repairs Corvairs exclusively, he’s also a steward of the largest ‘Vair scrap yard in the world.
25 years ago he rebuilt the engine of my ‘65 Corvair Monza. That arduous tale is worthy of an entire dispatch for another time.
For now, stay alert while you’re on the road this summer. You never know how an obscure reference in Town Character will induce a double-take.
